Are you up on the newest jean trends that everyone is wearing like staggered frayed hems?  Yep, culottes are back too.  (These culottes are Chelsea28, which is Olivia Palermo's line for Nordstrom...I love her classy style.)  If you don't have a favorite pair of boyfriend jeans yet...it's time!

It's a great time to stock up for colder weather with this sale!  Boots!!  Did I mention... boots?  I could shop for boots allllll day looooong.  I simply love them.  Booties and over the knee are a must for me.

When Frye goes on sale, I pay attention.  That classic leather crossbody has great detail, but is simple enough that it's timeless.  It's a great deal!!

I have a cashmere wrap in gray very similar to the one above and I wear it so much.  Perfect for chilly evenings, travel.... it's just so handy and will last forever.  It can make jeans and a white t-shirt look very rich.

Here's a couple of bonuses for you since I didn't really have any cute blouses on my list!  These are killer deals as one is under $20 and the other is under $30!

This Striped Tank is less than $20 and is a steal at 40% off!  Cute in all three colors and it would look fantastic with the staggered hem jeans and peep toe booties!  I have all three so I plan to wear that combo this summer a lot...

This Tunic Blouse is on sale for less than $30 and would be such a versatile top.  All three colors are beautiful and would look great untucked....or with a front tuck to help show your waist, elongate your legs and show off your cute jeans!

Kale Caesar Salad

July 10, 2016 Shannon Taatjes

A Caesar Salad is always a hit.  It's a favorite of mine but I started avoiding ordering it....or making it at home... once I started living a Paleo lifestyle because Caesar dressing isn't the healthiest, right?  It's usually made with unhealthy oils (like canola and soybean oils), sugar and dairy galore.  Dressings are what you have to watch out for because dressings can make a salad unhealthy fast... I found a great way to recreate this "Kaeser Salad" that I had in Maui earlier this year that was FABULOUS.  Instead of romaine, they used kale....

I make this one with the Curly Kale which is the most common kale you'll see.  You could make this with any variety of kale you choose, but I prefer the curly kale for this one.  (I prefer the Black Kale or "Dinosaur Kale" for my Tuscan Kale Salad.)

Ingredients:

  • Kale - 1 bunch

  • 1/2 cup pine nuts (toasted, see below)

  • Caesar Dressing of choice (I'm going to give you healthy options below)

  • Parmesan Cheese (optional, leave out for dairy-free and Whole30)

  • Chicken (optional to make it a meal)

Wash and dry the kale.  Slice the kale into strips with a sharp knife.  Discard any large pieces of the tough center ribs.  Place all of the kale pieces in a bowl and "massage" it a bit.  This means just rub it, which bruises is a little so that it makes it more tender.  Set aside.

In a dry skillet, heat a pan to medium heat.  Add the pine nuts and stir constantly until golden brown.  It's important you don't walk away during this process as you don't want them to burn.  If needed, turn the heat down so they cook evenly.  Once they are golden brown, remove from heat to cool in a bowl.  You don't have to use the whole 1/2 cup of nuts, they'll keep because you will want to make this again soon;)

If you don't want to make your own dressing, a great healthy bottled option is Tessemae's Dressings which are fantastic.  The Caesar one is Whole30 approved!  (Most of them are, just read the ingredients as a couple they make are not Whole30 approved)  They carry them at Whole Foods in the refrigerated section near the salads and they have a Caesar that works perfectly for this salad.  If you can't find it in a store near you, I gave you the convenient Amazon link above.

If you want to make your own, try Primal Palate's Caesar Dressing Recipe.  It's healthy, easy and tastes fantastic.

With Kale, you actually want to dress your salad at least 30 minutes before serving it, and be generous with your dressing to make sure it's coated well.  This allows the dressing to soften the kale and decrease the bitter taste kale can have.  Dress your salad and toss and set aside in the fridge.  When ready to serve, add the toasted pine nuts and a sprinkle of high quality parmesan cheese if you choose.

This is a wonderful, healthy side dish for your summer BBQ's that your family and friends will love!  If you want to make it a meal, add shredded chicken to it...easy!  What's more?  It keeps if you have leftovers even after it's dressed!  I love that about kale, it doesn't get soggy and you can make it ahead of time and have a healthy salad at your fingertips!

6 Steps to Choosing a Healthy Protein Powder

June 29, 2016 Shannon Taatjes

Does choosing a Protein Powder for you and your family make your head spin?  You're not alone.

It's time to turn our beloved protein powder around guys and start reading those ingredients.  What you see might surprise you.  I'm going to help you through it by giving you 6 steps to choosing a healthy protein powder... Here we go.

I love a good smoothie after a workout because it's super easy, and gives me a protein boost following a workout to help my muscles recover.  I also love having it around for a healthy mid-day snack.  Protein powders are everywhere these days.  It's no wonder you stand there in the aisle of the store or vitamin shop and don't know what's the best choice.  I'm going to help you out so you can make a better decision...

There are many things to consider when choosing a protein powder.  I'm going to tell you what's important to me when I look for a good protein supplement because some of these things you may know about but some of these important things may surprise you...

6 Steps to choosing a Healthy Protein Powder:

1.  UNDERSTAND THAT A PROTEIN SUPPLEMENT IS JUST THAT...A SUPPLEMENT:  You are also eating a healthy diet throughout the day that consists of other protein sources, some carbs, and healthy fats, so this doesn't need need to replace that.  Unless you are a hard core weightlifter, and I mean hard core, you don't need all that, trust me.  I've heard many people say that they want a protein supplement to have SO much protein!  Those really high levels of protein just aren't necessary for most of us.  I used to think the more the better, but after getting Nutritious Life Certified, most of us take too much!  Look for one that's about 15 grams per serving.

2.  THE SOURCE OF THE PROTEIN IS REALLY IMPORTANT:  Gone are the days of the Whey protein shakes in my opinion.  Whey is dairy.  Dairy doesn't agree with many people and I don't believe it's the healthiest choice.  I've taken dairy out of my family's diet for the most part and we feel a lot better.  From time to time I'll have some high quality grass fed butter or  cheese from a good source... but most whey you will find in protein powders aren't going to be from high quality, grass fed dairy.  This is why I just steer clear of them.  The reason that whey protein powders ARE as popular as they are.... is because they taste good.  The dairy provides a nice creamy, smooth mouth feel that is appealing to most people.  Now you know why they're yummy....but there are better options that are healthier.

Another option as a protein source that people used to think was healthy.... is soy.  Soy is bad for you and you should stay away from it.  Period.  It mimics estrogen in the body and can cause all kinds of problems, including cancer.  It can also cause nutrient absorption problems.

Some protein powders use egg white as the protein source.  I've used them and they actually taste pretty good.  The problem with these can be the price for the amount of servings you get.  This option...and dairy obviously...is not an option for vegans either.  When I started learning even more about seed oils and how they can affect the body, I continued my search because I the egg white protein I was previously using had sunflower seed oil in it....which brings me to my next point in a moment...

I think the best choice for a protein source is a plant based protein.  It works for just about anyone with any lifestyle....paleo to vegan.  Here's the problem with most plant based protein powders:  they taste like chalk.  Yep, they may be a healthier choice, but they don't have that smooth texture and good flavor.  I happened to have found one that actually tastes delicious AND has a creamy, smooth texture.  That brings me to the third thing I look for in a healthy protein powder....

3.  WHAT KIND OF OIL IS BEING USED IN YOUR PROTEIN POWDER?  You might be thinking, Oil... what Oil??  Protein powders have an emulsifier in them in the form of an oil.  Most protein powders use unhealthy seed oils in them.  Even the ones that claim to be healthier contain sunflower oil which is high in Omega 6's which we don't need any more of in our bodies!  This can cause inflammation that leads to all kinds of lifestyle diseases.  What our body does need is Omega 3's.  A healthier option would to be to find a protein powder with Coconut Oil used for the emulsifier and you'll make sure you're getting those healthy Omega 3's.  Coconut Oil also helps with the creamy, silky-smooth mouth feel we love in our smoothies!

4.  WHAT SWEETENERS ARE USED?  This is one of the most important things to look at.  So many of the protein powders out there contain artificial sweeteners that are really unhealthy for you.  There are some that are completely unsweetened, but I've tried them and they just don't taste good.  I like to enjoy my smoothie, not have to choke it down, so I look for one with Stevia, monk fruit or coconut sugar as a sweetener.  The one I use even cuts the stevia amount further by adding a bit of monk fruit... and they use the organic stevia and monk fruit in it's pure, leaf form.  I like that.... not that processed white powdery kind of stevia that leaves an aftertaste.  I'm very sensitive to the stevia taste, and that's why I love this one....no aftertaste;)

5.  WHERE ARE THE INGREDIENTS COMING FROM?  Do you know?  Do you know if they are from another country?  Do you know if they are GMO free and/or organic?  Do you know if they contain grains, gluten or soy?  Those things matter.  The less ingredients the better.  Is your list on your protein powder long? ....or short?  Trust me, short is better and you should understand what every ingredient is and where it came from.  This may sound nit-picky to some, but your health depends on it, so start paying attention to these things.  Once you do, you'll be surprised what you learn.

6.  LET'S TALK PRICE:  This matters because we want to get a healthy option without going broke, right?  I just want to make you aware of ways that some companies may try to trick you into thinking you're getting a better deal than you actually are.  Once you're aware of it, you'll know how to shop smarter.  Look at how many serving there are per container.  I can't tell you how many times I've looked at this and I've caught them trying to be sneaky!  For example, if you have two comparable products with comparable prices, but one seems like the better deal.... look at the servings per container.  One might have 30 servings and will last an entire month, and the other may only have 15 servings!  Not such a great deal anymore now is it!  Just keep your eye on that because that's how they get you!

So, I've tried many different protein powders over the years and once I considered all of the things I've listed above, I have a new favorite I've been dying to tell my readers and followers about!  Check it out and get yours HERE.

Let's see how it checks out using my 6 steps above....

  1. It's 14 grams of protein per serving, perfect for my supplement amount goal.
  2. It's plant protein made from pea, chia, pumpkin, hemp, and quinoa.
  3. It has coconut oil in it as the emulsifier...that rocks.
  4. It's sweetened with organic stevia and monk fruit...and has no stevia aftertaste because very little is used.
  5. It's made in the USA, non-GMO, dairy free, soy free, grain free, gluten free, with nothing artificial what-so-ever.  It has less than 10 ingredients in it...total!!
  6. It has 30 servings per container, love that!  Great price for that kind of quality.

I get asked a lot about what kind of protein powder I use and recommend.  I've never been truly satisfied recommending one until now, so I don't talk about it much.  This new one I found is amazing.  It is hands down the best tasting plant based protein powder I've ever tried.

Enjoy, and I want to hear what you think once you give it a try!  You won't find this one in stores but you can always find it here on my website under the SHOP menu, along with all the supplements I use and recommend.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask!  Oh, and they have incredibly fast shipping so you'll have it in no time;)

My Favorite Go-To Smoothie Recipe:

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk
  • 1 scoop of Vanilla or Chocolate Life's Abundance Plant Protein Powder
  • 1 handful spinach or kale (OR 1 scoop Greens Blend)
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil (this healthy fat will keep you full longer and is good for you) or almond butter
  • a handful of frozen berries...or frozen banana (I keep frozen banana pieces in the freezer for convenience)
  • generous sprinkle of cinnamon
  • a scoop of Collagen (optional - great for skin and joint health)

Blend all ingredients until smooth in a blender.  YUM.  You really can't go wrong, this protein powder is delicious even just blended with water and a few ice cubes!!

Here's another delicious recipe using this protein:  My Paleo Vanilla Raw Balls

Bulletproof Brain Octane - why I've added it to my morning routine

June 18, 2016 Shannon Taatjes

I've been a fan of blending coconut oil in my coffee for some time now.  It has helped a ton to give up cream and sugar in my coffee and makes the black coffee on the Whole30 enjoyable again.

...but I hadn't tried the "official" Bulletproof coffee yet with the Brain Octane in it.  Can this really give us superpowers with increased brain health?   I honestly thought it was just hype.  I thought all coconut oil was the same.  While regular coconut oil is fantastic, my husband had looked into it asked me if I'd order some recently, so I did.  We've been blending this into our coffee for the past week and we're really liking it.

What's different about Brain Octane?  It's the pure Medium Chain Triglycerides extracted from the coconut, so it's super concentrated.  It's the only product with 100% C8, so this makes it 18x stronger than coconut oil.  So what does this mean?

Brain Octane Oil may provide the following benefits: (from the Bulletproof website)

  • Fast Energy - Brain Octane, the shortest of the MCT’s, converts into ketone energy which can be used by the brain, faster than other fats or oils.
  • Balancing of yeast in the gut—Studies show that there are gut biome balancing effects of caprylic fatty acids.
  • Does NOT Increase Cholesterol – Metabolized differently than other types of fat
  • Flavorless and easy to add into diet. Mix into any smoothie, soup, sushi, coffee or most recipes, for more intense mental activity.
  • Easy Storage - No refrigeration required and liquid at room temperature
  • Contains the most ketogenic MCT in coconut oil, C8, from the heart of the coconut
  • Cleaned, extracted and bottled without the use of harsh chemicals

I must admit, I've noticed major increase in my energy level this past week.  I do feel more focused.  I'm also on the Whole30 right now, so I know from past experience that I get that Tiger Blood energy starting to show up about this time, so it's hard to say what exactly is the cause of my increased energy.

Start out slow if you choose to give this a try, by adding one teaspoon and working your way up to 1 tablespoon.  Otherwise you could end up with "disaster pants", it actually says this on the label.  LOL.  I blend 1 tablespoon into my morning coffee and add a sprinkle of cinnamon and it's really frothy and yummy, even though it's flavorless.  You can also add grass fed butter to increase creaminess, but I tend to go without the butter, especially when I'm on Whole30 because dairy is out.

My verdict?  I like it.  My husband likes it.  I'm going to continue to use it.  I know that MCTs are good for brain health.  I know that by adding healthy fat, it keeps us full and satisfied way longer.  For example if we had only carbs for breakfast, like a bagel for example, we get hungry about 2 hours later.  By having healthy fat we stay satisfied for 4-5 hours.  I've definitely noticed this.  That's why people experience weight loss by adding Bulletproof coffee to their life.  My advice, just make sure you are getting adequate nutrition by eating healthy, nutritious food....and eating enough.  Make this an "add-on" to your healthy lifestyle.

What is my morning routine that I do each and every morning?

I'm 44 years old now and I get asked a lot how I stay looking so young.  Part of it is genetics.  Thanks mom and dad.  The other part is I take good care of myself.  Here's my morning routine that I think is great maintenance for anyone.

  • GUT HEALTH:  Upon waking up, I drink a glass of water with lemon in it.  Sometimes it's tea with lemon and ginger if I feel leisurely...but most of the time it's just a glass of water.  The lemon is detoxing and drinking water first thing in the morning lubricates our organs and is wonderful for our health.  It starts our day off on the right hydrating track.  So instead of heading straight for the coffee maker, try this new healthy habit.  While drinking this water, I take a daily Probiotic.  Our immune system lives in our gut and this will ensure that 80/20 balance of friendly gut bacterial that is essential for our health...and will prevent lifestyle diseases!  This is the one I take daily ...I've done my research and it works as it should.  Many don't.
  • MENTAL HEALTH:  I listen to a meditation.  Sometimes I listen to a 10 minute Abrahams-Hicks you tube video, sometimes I listen to GraceSpace guided meditations and hypnosis.  Don't be afraid of hypnosis.  All hypnosis is...is meditation with a goal.  Don't knock it until you try it.  It can help you overcome A LOT of that shiz that you're carrying around!  Try it free for 10 days HERE!  It's SO important to start our day with the right mindset.  Give it a try;)
  • BRAIN HEALTH:  I have a cup of coffee with Brain Octane blended in it.  I use my little  Magic Bullet blender because it's so easy with less mess.
  • BODY HEALTH:  I exercise.  The coffee gives me energy.  Sometimes it's a workout DVD, sometimes it's a walk, sometimes it's SUP yoga in my pool.  I just go move my body.
  • I have 1 or 2 hard boiled eggs (for example when I'm Whole30-ing) or a protein smoothie (when I'm not on Whole30).  Since breakfast isn't a time I usually get greens in, I love adding a scoop of this healthy greens blend to my smoothies.  It's so easy.  This is the protein I use and trust.  (I love that it has healthy coconut oil in it instead of any yucky seed oils.  It's creamy, smooth, and tastes amazing.)
  • Then I'm ready to go about my day!  If you're crunched for time, exercise later!  You can fit everything else I mentioned here in before you go to work!  You just have to get your priorities straight, stop making excuses, and start creating healthy habits!  You'll stay full longer.  You'll start each day with the right mindset.  You'll be doing a TON for your health by ensuring a healthy gut and brain....this is essential as we age!

Here's to aging beautifully + gracefully!  I want to hear from you!  If you add any of these healthy habits to YOUR morning routine, I want to hear how you like it.

- I am in no way sponsored or payed by Bulletproof.  This is a completely unbiased review of their product.  There may be other links throughout this post that I may earn a tiny commission if you click and buy.  This helps me continue to create free content for you, so I thank you for your support of my website.  I ONLY recommend things that I use and love myself.

Cauliflower Chowder

June 9, 2016 Shannon Taatjes

I found this recipe on Pinterest by Paleo Leap and they had me at crumbled bacon on top...YUMMM.

I love Cauliflower soup, but I really loved this one.  The bacon and the fresh dill were a different touch...and all those fresh veggies and spices made it really delicious.  My husband asked for seconds.

You can find the full recipe HERE.

Here's the only thing I did different... I put about 3/4 of the soup into the Vitamix after cooking and pureed it.  I then added it back to the pot and mixed it with the rest of the soup that still had chunks of veggies.  It was a wonderful mix of creamy...but kept it thick with texture like a chowder.  That's just my preference, you can read the full recipe and decide how you'd like it.  (You can see the chunks of veggies better in the pic below,,, thanks to my hubby for being my model.)  Oh, and use sugar-free bacon if you're on the Whole30.  Enjoy!

Pan Seared Pork Chops

June 6, 2016 Shannon Taatjes

When many people think of pork chops they think of dry...breaded...rubbery...and bland.  Well I'm here to introduce you to the flavorful, juicy, crusted pork chop...

Ingredients:

  • 4 Pork Loin Chops (1 inch thick)
  • 3 tbsp cooking fat - coconut oil or ghee or both (I used 1 tbsp ghee + 2 tbsp coconut oil)
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp seasoning mix of choice (I used "21 Seasoning Salute" from Trader Joe's)

Dry the pork chops off with paper towels.  Mix the seasonings together and coat both sides of the chops thoroughly, really rub the seasoning all over so they're covered.  Let them sit out of the fridge for 30 minutes (this will help with the juiciness).  Heat the fat in a large cast iron skillet over high heat until very hot.  Add the chops and don't move them for 4 minutes to let them get a nice sear on them.  With tongs, flip them over (add more fat if your pan looks dry) and set the timer for another 4 minutes.  Remove from pan and check with a meat thermometer.  It should read between 145 and 160 degrees F.  Then let it rest for 5-10 minutes (this part is important).

Serve... and ooh and ahh at the amazing flavor or the seared crust....and incredible juiciness!  I served this with steamed artichokes, lemon wedges, and homemade mayo.  Enjoy!
