Happy Frenchie Friday!

IMG_5663 Happy Frenchie Friday everyone!  We had a beautiful day in Sonoma today wine tasting and shopping....we even stopped into our favorite Dog Bakery and got Stella a new toy... a Flying Pig!

IMG_5687

We met "Axel", this awesome bulldog who comes to work with his owner at this amazing furniture store in Sonoma.  He plays with this BUCKET and gets it stuck on his head.  He was so HILARIOUS.

IMG_5685

They even sell these T-Shirts and little statues of Axel!...he was so cute.  He's SO dense and compact!  Stella's only 18 pounds and this guy was 80 pounds!!

If you ever find yourself on Highway 121 in Sonoma, stop off at "Sonoma Cornerstone"...they have great food, small tasting rooms and an AMAZING garden!  Plus, it's directly across the street from Gloria Ferrer Winery...one of our favorite stops;)  This was me today enjoying the gardens....this was a beautiful lily pond.

IMG_5683

They had really cool artsy installations in the gardens...like this one full of cactus.  It had nets above that looked like clouds with crystals hanging down that looked like rain...

Hope you are enjoying your Frenchie Friday as much as we did!  I'm going to go give Stella her new "pig"!  :)

-Thanks to Natashia, my friend who sent me this "Happy Friday" picture this morning from 'Dogington Post' - it was perfect for my Frenchie Friday post today!  It looks just like "Stella"!

Our Staycation...

For those of you with a few days off this summer but desire to stay home...why not plan a Staycation?  A great time doesn't have to require a pricey airline ticket and hotel stay...it just requires a little thinking outside the box, some planning, and the desire for a fun adventure! staycation

A staycation is a period in which a couple, individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within driving distance, sleeping in their own beds at night.

This Labor Day weekend my husband and I decided to have a "staycation" and really enjoy these few days at home.  We wanted to have tons of fun, doing things close by, with a mindset we would have if we were on vacation.

Sometimes when you are at home for a long weekend, it can be easy to fall into the same routines...and before you know it, it's over.  That's why I haven't done a blog post until today...I was on staycation!

The weather couldn't have been better for our staycation.  We drove to the coast, twice.  We hiked.  We ate sushi.  We swam.  We had a TV show marathon.  We went to a cute small festival and walked around the booths and listened to music.  Most of all...we had FUN.  We went to our favorite oyster place...The Marshall Store in Tomales Bay.  Best oysters, hands down.  The BBQ one's are the best one's they make.  It's a little hole- in-the-wall right on the highway in Tomales Bay.  They have great clam chowder too.  The tables are outside, on a tiny stretch right between the highway and the water.  It's one of our favorite places.

We also were very active this weekend which felt great.  We hiked, worked out, and took up a new fun hobby!  We were at Dick's, our local sporting good store getting my husband some new shoes when we remembered we'd been talking about playing tennis.  We took a look at the racquets, each of us picked one out, got some balls and we were set!  We didn't spend too much on racquets since we weren't sure how this was going to go...since neither of us had played in over 20 years!

IMG_5605

We went down to the high school and gave it a go!  It was SO much fun!  We didn't get serious, just hit the ball without keeping score.  We both liked it enough that we are so excited to go again!  It's always so wonderful to find something outdoors that's active that we can enjoy together.  Like I said, we'd been talking about it for a while now....but hadn't done anything about it!  Don't put it off!  Go do something fun!  Go do something new!

Plan your down-time for your staycation!  We also relaxed on our staycation...guilt-free!  Instead of just clicking through the channels, we decided to binge watch a show on Netflix we'd always wanted to see.  When we found ourselves worn out from the activities of the day, we got SO into Breaking Bad!  Neither of us had seen it, but had always wanted to...we are now hooked.   Maybe there's a show or movies you've been wanting to catch up on!  Have a marathon...watch them together!

Here are some ideas for your next staycation:

  1. Unplug - get your nose out of your phone and computer and enjoy your family!
  2. Get into a VACATION MINDSET!  Be carefree!
  3. Go camping - in your own backyard!
  4. Don't cook, get takeout from a great restaurant or have someone cook for you
  5. If you are able...Hire a maid service for a day while you're out playing "tourist" and come home to a clean house!
  6. Get active - go outside and hike, bike....play tennis!  :)
  7. Take a drive nearby - stop somewhere you've always wanted to stop, enjoy and be spontaneous!
  8. Look up festivals or shows nearby
  9. Have a movie or TV show marathon
  10. Act like a tourist - chances are there is something in your area that you’ve never experienced.  When we live somewhere for so long, we kind of forget about the places that draw others into our region.
  11. Do nothing - Take one day to just lay in bed (or in your backyard, couch, or anywhere else) and do as close to nothing as possible. Chat a bit about nothing serious, read a book together, or just lay in the sun for the afternoon. Sometimes doing nothing is the best part of the staycation.
  12. DON'T talk about work or anything too serious, DON'T do laundry or clean (too much), DON'T check emails, DON'T drink too much, & DON'T argue!

The next weekend you and your family find yourself at home....plan a staycation and think of things that are close by to enjoy, that you don't normally do!  Think of things you would do if you had never visited your area before!  Act like a tourist and have fun with it!  See a show, look for festivals, stay active, eat good food....most importantly, have a "vacation mindset".  You'll feel refreshed and it will be great for your relationship!  The best part is, you don't have to travel far or fight any crowds....and you get to sleep in your own bed;)  I'm already looking forward to our next staycation!!

Frenchie Friday!

IMG_5557 Happy Frenchie Friday everyone!  It was cold the other morning and "Stella" was glad she had her jacket....even though she looks super embarrassed in this picture!

I had such an amazing day with my husband out at the coast...we went on a big hike which I actually didn't enjoy thoroughly.  A lot of it was through sand and after a few miles I wasn't too happy with all the sand in my tennis shoes and feeling like I was in quicksand!  We got a great hike/workout out of it though and once we got out of there we enjoyed the rest of our day;)  And we did see these pretty girls...

IMG_7854

We went for a glass of wine at Gourmet Au Bay because I earned it...then headed toward Tomales Bay for oysters.  I saw my DREAM CAR at a restaurant so we HAD to pull in just so I could say hi to it....I've wanted one of these Porshe Speedsters since I was seven years old...I want a cream one:)

IMG_0833

I went inside to try to see if I could pick out who belonged to that car...a fun game.  I totally nailed it.  I saw this cute old couple in the corner, drinking white wine, their hair all windblown....I told my husband, "that's them."  Soon, she came over to the window...just to peek outside to check on her baby.  I was right!!!  Someday that will be me.  :)

We headed out to our FAVORITE place to have oysters next.  Marshall Store in Tomales Bay.  The best place for oysters, hands down.  We ordered a dozen BBQ oysters, (that's the best to order, by the way, we've tried them all).  It's right on the highway...you eat them outside on the water, it just doesn't get any better!  Yes, I even had a bite of that garlic bread!

What a great adventure today...so happy to come home to this sweet pea, it's her day after all....Happy Frenchie Friday!!!

Life Changes: How To Gain Perspective

perspective What a week!  I had one of my very oldest friends from high school come see me.  My stepson went back to college after spending the summer at home.  To top it all off...we had an earthquake here in Northern California!

All these things together got me thinking about change.  It got me thinking about how many changes I've gone through since high school.  It got me thinking about all the changes my stepsons are going through.  It got me thinking about how life can change in an instant...when we least expect it.

Life is full of changes.  No one really loves change.  Dealing with changes can be uncomfortable, even scary, because there are a lot of "unknowns".  A great way to deal with life changes is to get perspective on life.  Gaining perspective is key.  It often makes the difference between resisting or accepting the new changes that are happening in your life.  So how do we do that?

  • Get Away.  New places, new faces and new experiences can help you gain perspective.  It can help you break out of a rut you may be in and can help you clear your mind.  Traveling someplace new can help you get away from the contents of your everyday life and therefore the "change" that has happened may not seem quite as uncomfortable, scary or sad anymore.
  • Surround yourself with positive people.  This is something we should all do anyway, but is especially important during times of change.  This includes yourself and your own self-talk.  If you were your own best friend, what advice would you give yourself?  Remember that you would probably offer words of encouragement.
  • Do something fun.  Allowing yourself to enjoy and receive pleasure in life creates new pathways for openings and inspiration.  It elevates your mood and energy, giving you greater perspective on what happened and what's possible. It frees up stuck energy.
  • Be healthy.  When we're under great amounts of stress, it's easy to fall of the bandwagon, stop exercising and eat unhealthy foods. This can throw us off balance.  Staying healthy can help us make the right decisions.  Notice exercise sounds a lot like "exorcise."  Moving can help us purge our tension and inner demons.  Being healthy keeps us in flow.
  • Spend time alone.  When you're going through major life changes, being alone may be the last thing you really want to do.  Often times we want to fill up empty space we feel with TV or an overly-chatty friend.  Being around too many people and ideas can drown out the still, inner voice that resides within you when you are quiet.  Spend time in nature, take walks, trust what feels right.  These are often the times we receive guidance that may lead to your next step.  Sometimes looking at something bigger than us...can make us feel small.  This can help us realize that whatever difficult change we are going through isn't really as big as we think it is.  It always seems SO important...until it doesn't.  Perspective is key.

These are just a few ways that can help you gain perspective in times of change...wanted and unwanted change.  Sometimes we have to make hard choices in life, I know I have.  Sometimes change is unexpected.  Either way, hopefully these tools can help with the process.

I can't write about change without mentioning this....A GREAT tool to learn about life changes is the book "Who Moved My Cheese" by Spencer Johnson, M.D.  It's a simple story about  two mice named Sniff and Scurry, and two "Littlepeople" named Hem and Haw who live in a maze and they look for cheese to make them happy.  The "cheese" is a metaphor for the things we want in life and the "maze" is where we look for what we want.  In the story, the characters are faced with unexpected change.  It is written for all ages and it's unique insights can last a lifetime.  A wonderful book for the whole family.

Life will always be full of changes.  Those changes don't have to cause stress if we have tools to make dealing with them easier.  Those changes could be a blessing in disguise.  Those changes could be an opportunity to grow.  Just remember, whatever changes you face in life, they aren't permanent.
