Facial Massage

At 46 years old, I'm all about aging gracefully. I've never had any "work done"...not even botox which is quite common today.

With that said...aging, wrinkles and sagging skin is the pits. I'm always looking for ways to look and feel beautiful in a natural and safe way and sharing things I've found that I love.

Lately I've learned more about Facial Massage and I'm a fan...

The face is full of nerves and pressure points and is a great way to pamper yourself...while benefiting your skin. Facial massage is not a new thing. It's been used in Chinese medicine for a very long time...

Here's some benefits of Facial Massage:

We know how important excercise is for our body. Think of it like exercise for your face. 

  • It increases circulation by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the face which is like a "natural face lift".
  • It helps your face products absorb better and deeper into skin so they can work even better.
  • Relieves tension in the face...tension that can lead to more wrinkles.
  • You'll look younger because the massage stimulates blood flow, which increases collagen and over time will help you have more youthful, glowing, firmer skin.
  • Reduces puffiness by helping to move and redistrubute fluid and subcutaneous fat that can settle.
  • Reduce stress and anxiety by relieving that facial tension.
  • Helps congestion, allergies, even headaches, by releasing sinus pressure that can build up.
  • Detoxes the body by stimulating the lymphatic system to release toxins (get those areas along the jawline especially).
  • It FEELS GOOD. A great way to do something for YOU daily that's healthy!

When I first started facial massage I was surprised how much that the area around my eyebrows was painful when I massaged there...like it was sore. This really made me realize just how much tension I was holding there. Over time, that pain has gone away because I'm releasing that tension on a regular basis. I love that.

Facial massage can be done during a facial by a professional but there are ways you can easily bring the benefits of into your home by easily doing it yourself.

You can use your fingers to perform a facial massage on yourself, but I've found a couple of tools that I use and love...

Tools I use for at-home Facial Massage:

I love this...I even give my husband facial massage treatments and he LOVES IT. Don't tell him I told you that;)
  • Jade Roller - the above device is my favorite but this is a less expensive option that I work into my facial massage routine too. The guys from Queer Eye For the Straight Guy recently talked about this...so you know it works because those guys know the best beauty tricks! Jade is naturally cooling. Just make sure you get one made with real Jade like this one I've linked. Oh and don't drop it because it will break.
  • Ice Roller - I don't use this as much as the other two tools above, but when I'm feeling extra "puffy" and I need it...I'm glad I have it. I keep it in the freezer all the time and once in a while I roll my face and neck in upward strokes with this super cold roller that totally stimulates my skin and wakes it up! When I do use it, I use this one first with no product, then apply Face Oil or Serum, and follow with one of the above. Extra tip....this ice roller can be used on your body too, for example when I've had shin splints from running, I'll ice my shins and it works great! Also great for headaches. Here's what it looks like....

Products I use for at-home Facial Massage:

You don't want to use facial massage just with dry skin. First of all you don't want to tug on skin...you want the massager to glide on skin easily. Second massage allows products to absorb deeper into skin and work better, so I choose safe, high performing products that are like "nutrition" for my skin...

  • Beautycounter Face Oils - Don't be afraid of face oils....especially these face oils. I think of them as "liquid gold".  They're on BC's "Best of Beautycounter" customer-voted list and won Allure's "Best of Beauty" Award in 2017.  Since discovering these face oils I will never be without them. They aren't synthetic like many face oils on the market, so they don't sit on top of skin, make you break out, or make you feel greasy...they absorb and moisturize beautifully. This is my go-to product whenever using my Clarisonic Massage Head.
  • Countermatch Intense Moisture Serum - This is a super concentrated serum that bio-mimics your skin to give it exactly what it needs and nothing it doesn't. This one absorbs a little bit quicker than the Face Oil, so I use this with my Jade Roller, but doesn't work as well with the Clarisonic.

How to:

Apply product to face and then use your tool of choice in upward, outward strokes all over your face. When using the jade roller, I use it until it no longer feels cool on my face which is a couple of minutes. When I use the Clarisonic, I use it a bit longer...about 3-5 minutes. I try to use facial massage daily, but at least 3 times a week. Many times I do it right upon waking before I even go to the kitchen or have coffee. It makes my skin feel awake, alive, and hydrated. Starting the day like this is a great pick-me-up!

Fueling your Fitness

When it comes to a healthy lifestyle, I encourage moving your body.  Every day.  Do what makes you happy rather than what you dread and you'll be more likely to stick with it.  For me, sometimes that means a workout DVD.  Sometimes that means paddle boarding.  Sometimes that means hiking.  Sometimes that means dancing in my kitchen...  I just move.  Every day.

So how do we fuel our fitness and keep our bodies nourished....without sacrificing quality....or taste?

A common question I get is what to eat before and after a workout.  I think this is a great question but the thing is, it's not a one size fits all answer.  You don't want to be too full....or be running on empty.

First I think it's important to consider what type of activity you'll be doing and for how long.  If you are doing a low intensity workout or a walk, you may not need a pre-workout meal at all, especially if you're nourishing your body at regular meals.  If you're doing a harder or longer workout, it's a good idea to have a small meal or snack beforehand and take something with you.

Before a workout, I don't encourage eating too much because your body will have trouble performing well if it's using all its energy to digest the food.  So it's important not to overeat and to choose easily digestible food that sustains your energy.  Most will do well with a small snack of protein and healthy fat.  You can add a little nutrient dense, low glycemic carbs too.  See what makes you feel your best.  Fruit is not the best choice pre workout as it won't sustain you.

Some good pre-workout snacks: 

  • hard boiled eggs (I steam mine)
  • celery with almond butter
  • chia pudding
  • high quality deli meat w/ avocado
  • tuna with homemade mayo
  • a handful of nuts (not peanuts)
  • coffee blended with 1 tsp - 1 tbsp coconut oil and cinnamon

After a workout, I like to have something to eat 15-30 mins after and choose a protein and a carb.  A great choice is a protein and a starchy carb.  Don't think you need to load up on large amounts of these after an average workout.  Only if you are training HARD at an athlete's level do you need to really replenish in that way.  My tip is No, you don't have to eat your weight in protein after a workout!

Some good post-workout choices:

  • hard boiled egg and banana (easy grab & go food)
  • a great vegan option is my fave "Green Smoothie" (almond milk, plant based protein, frozen banana, handful of spinach or Greens, and cinnamon)
  • egg scramble with veggies and sweet potato
  • a slice of Ezekiel toast with avocado, himalayan sea salt and a soft boiled egg
  • Plantain chips and tuna

So what if you are hiking, biking, skiing, at an event or race, etc and need to fuel your body?

If you look in my car, bag or purse at any given time you will always find a protein bar or two in there.  That way if I get hungry...or my husband or friends get hungry.... I have something healthy to tide us over.  Here's the thing....

When you look at the protein bar section in a store these days, it can make your head spin.  Most of them are FULL of junky, processed, artificial ingredients that won't fuel your healthy lifestyle!  Make sure to read the ingredients....that's what matters most.  

So what's in my bag right now?  RxBars are my go-to.  I love their limited ingredients.  I like to switch it up too and am always looking for new clean options.  Another great choice are GoMacro Bars, especially for those with allergies, sensitivities, or dietary restrictions.  The quality, clean ingredients have passed my inspection and there are a ton of flavors and textures to choose from.  Not to worry, the natural sugars and infant-safe brown rice syrup found in GoMacro Bars are packed with sustained energy.  The best thing about these bars?  They taste kinda amazing.  If you're in a hurry, grab a high quality protein bar for a pre or post workout snack from time to time, it's totally fine!

Benefits of Using a Diffuser

Last year I started cleaning up my act in new ways besides just nutrition.  I started my Safe Product Movement where I encouraged you to start learning how to detox your home.  Since then I have made so many healthy changes.

I was one of those who would buy all the fragranced candles at Target.  While I enjoyed the scent, I started to learn more about just how toxic they can be.  So I learned more about making a healthier switch....

My most recent switch was getting an aromatherapy diffuser for my home.  I'd heard they had healthy benefits, but every time I saw one I was honestly put off by how ugly they were.  Until I came across this bamboo one....

It has mood lights too which I thought would be kinda cheesy when I picked it out, but I now love the colors!  It's so pretty and completely customizable.  You can set the color, have the colors rotate, or turn it off which I do at night.

How To Drink Your Greens

Rise and Shine healthy friends!  It's Day 6 of my Eat Your Greens Challenge and today I want to share a super easy way to ensure you're getting plenty of greens in every day.  Since this challenge is only seven days, we need some tricks up our sleeves to keep this going all month...and all year...long.  Now, I want to reiterate that supplements are supposed to be exactly that, a supplement to a healthy lifestyle, not a free pass to eat "all the junk".  Now that we've established that, I'd like to share expert advice by Keri Glassman.  She explains three ways to get your greens through a straw!  With summer on it's way, I can't wait to create tasty, healthy summer smoothies...


How To Drink Your Greens:

Many people assume a green juice is for other people. They claim they don’t like veggies. They fear the poison-colored concoction will taste even worse than it looks. They think die-hard green juicers seem nutritionally elitist and willing to compromise their taste buds in the name of super fuel.

While there is definitely a spectrum of green -- from beginner to advanced -- there is a place for you somewhere along the line. I promise. And I’m encouraging you to join the party, because nothing bad happens when people add more whole green foods to their diet. Nothing. Zilch.

There are a few ways to go about getting more greens into your diet, and I promise they’re way easier than you think. Best part? You don’t even need a fork. You only need a straw.

Here are three ways to drink your greens …

1) Hop on the green juice train. If you want to make your own juice, you’ll need a juicer but not necessarily the fanciest one on the market. Juicing is a process that extracts the liquid from whatever you put in it, and it leaves all the pulp out of your cup. The pulp is full of beneficial fiber, but if pulp isn’t your thing, you still get plenty of vitamins and minerals from drinking just the juice. Not into cooked broccoli, kale, collards or spinach? You may like them better in a raw juice. Sometimes the flavors are milder when raw and combined with other ingredients.

Immediately after the juice is made, it starts losing its nutritional powers, so you’ll want to grab a straw STAT. Green juice is sensitive to time (how long from when it was made until it is consumed), temperature (heat can diminish some of the vitamin potency) and storage (air and clear glass containers can also make the juice less potent). But even not-so-fresh juice is better than no juice at all, so don’t let this deter you. Just make sure to put in the fridge and drink within 24 hours if you’re not drinking as soon as you make it. Here’s a great beginner recipe if you’re just getting your feet wet:

Keri’s Beginner Greens Juice

● ½ head of romaine lettuce

● ½ cucumber

● ½ cup spinach leaves

● 1 green apple

Clean all produce well. Toss in the juicer in order and drink immediately.

2) Get your smoothie on. If you don’t have any more room on your kitchen counter for yet another appliance, then your handy blender is waiting for you to let it make a smoothie. A blender can’t separate the pulp from the juice, which is why by definition smoothies are thicker and well, smoother. The smoothie crowd is just as cool as the green juice crowd, and some would even argue smoothies are even healthier than juices because of that pulp stuff I mentioned.

My formula for the perfect smoothie is incredibly simple … 1 cup almond or coconut milk (unsweetened), 1 fruit, a handful of greens, 1 healthy fat, an extra (call it a flavor wild-card...I love cinnamon) and a high quality, plant-based protein powder. 

One of my fave healthy fats is coconut because it’s loaded with health-promoting properties, flavor and, of course, healthy fats. The fat in coconut is mostly MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) and although they are a type of saturated fat, they are not the same saturated fat as you’ll get from say fatty meat.

3) Add a green supplement to your drink. Think green juices and smoothies too much work for you? I’ve got you covered. Does it make great juice?  Yup.  

Does it get used?  Nope.  

It's been sitting in my pantry taking up space because it's a lot of work to use...and mess...and money...for all those veggies I was buying to produce a little bit of juice!

Eat Your Greens Challenge

Keri Glassman of Nutritious Life is hosting a 7 Day Challenge: Eat Your Greens!  I'm participating and I want to get as many of my readers to participate too!  Now that I'm Nutritious Life Certified, I know how important it is to "Eat Empowered", one of the 8 pillars of health she teaches.  Too many of us aren't getting enough healthy greens in our diet EVERY DAY, (I'm even guilty of this sometimes!) so we are going to make it a HEALTHY HABIT over the next week... starting April 1st... Are you ready to get your greens on!? 

YOUR 7 DAY EAT YOUR GREENS CHALLENGE:

Day 1: Get Organized
Head to the store, peruse the produce, load up on greens (at least three varieties!) and plan for the week. Broccoli rabe, kale, spinach, green beans… the options are plentiful! Decide when and how you’re going to incorporate your greens. Spinach breakfast scramble anyone? Broccoli rabe chips (yep, kale you’ve had your chip glory)? Sautéed green beans with toasted walnuts as side to dinner? Write it down, and be sure to get greens in at least one time today!

Day 2: Keep it Simple
Review your plan and do some prep for the week. Chop kale for your go-to salad, wash and chop broccoli for dinner. If you’re saying, “time, yeah, right” then order a side salad when ordering in, and remember that bagged, pre-washed organic lettuce is a life savior.

Day 3: Recipe Research
Research delicious, new, simple recipes to try. Find a new instagram account to follow, crack open an old cookbook, or post something on social to get your peops to inspire you with ideas. New to the greens juice craze, or looking for an easier way to sip your greens? Try the new Greens Blend that Keri developed! Just add one scoop into a glass of water and boom, check greens off your to-do list for the day.

Day 4: Branch Out
Today, take it up a notch and experiment with a new type of green – try kalettes for your salad, or collards to wrap your sammie, broccoli rabe in your scramble, brussel sprouts for a dinner side dish, or endive as your hummus dipper.

Day 5: Ditch the Rice
Replace a starchy side dish with a green side dish. If you’re eating out, ask for double greens instead of greens and a starch. This is personal fave of mine. A great way to get in a whole lotta greens and an even better way to ditch refined, often fat and sodium laden starchy foods that are doing your body a whole lotta nothing!

Day 6: Flavor Fun
Season your greens! Experiment with new flavors – try oregano, chili pepper, garlic, rosemary, onion, salt and pepper, and lemon. Or toss some heart healthy nuts on top!

Day 7: Go All Out
Challenge yourself as the week ends by incorporating a serving of greens into every meal for the day. Yep, every meal.

You did it! Congratulations on packing in your greens. I bet you feel good about it don’t you? Tap into that feeling and keep it up! Dandelion greens, anyone?

Why You Should Challenge Yourself to Eat More Greens:

  • Greens Fight Disease. Green veggies offer a powerful dose of fiber, vitamins and minerals including antioxidants and phytochemicals, which have been shown to lower cholesterol, prevent heart disease and may help reduce the risk of cancer. The carotenoids in leafy greens act as antioxidants, slowing free radical damage.
  • Be Like Popeye. 1 cup of spinach has more than 1000% of your daily recommendation of vitamin K (strong bones!) and almost 300% your recommendation of vitamin A (20/20 vision anyone?).
  • Fill Up Til You’re Full. Leafy greens have a high water volume, which helps you stay hydrated. One study showed subjects’ metabolic rate increased 30% within 10 minutes after drinking 17 ounces of water. Their high fiber content not only leaves you feeling full for longer, it also helps keep things moving in the GI tract.
  • Amp Your Weight Loss. All veggies offer multiple nutrients for very few calories, aiding in weight loss efforts. When it comes to greens, the more the merrier!
  • Boost your brain. One study found women who ate the most leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables had brains that were 1 to 2 years “younger” in performance than those who ate fewer. Yep, eating more greens is a no-brainer. Sorry, had to.
  • Promote Skin Health. Phytochemicals and antioxidants in green veggies can help protect your skin against UV damage by countering free radicals in your body to lessen the deterioration of skin’s vital components like collagen and elastin. Say hello to greens and say hello to gorgeous skin. You may just pay a few less visits to your derm.
  • Get to Know Your Greens. Try to choose nutrient dense dark, leafy greens such as kale or spinach over less nutritious options such as iceberg lettuce. Iceberg is for beginners.
  • Ditch the Dressings. Don’t drench or fry your greens in dressings or oils. What a shame it would be to lose all of the natural nutritional power, right? No mucking up your gorgeous veggies.
  • There’s No Such Thing as Too Much. Never worry about consuming too many greens. More is better, as long as you’re controlling the added fat, such as olive oil.
  • Sip Green. While you’re embracing your green veggies, add a cup or two of green tea a day to keep up with the theme! You’ll get an extra kick of antioxidants. Not feeling tea? Try Life’s Abundance Berry Flavored Greens Blend.  It tastes amazing.

NOTE: The USDA considers a serving of greens either 1 cup raw or ½ cup cooked, but I want you to get at least this much in at every meal, hopefully more! A salad for example could be 2 cups and your side with dinner could be 1.5 cups!
